How to compare racewear materials

SFI rating is the certification level of a finished suit, glove or shoe. We build suits to SFI 3.2A/1 and SFI 3.2A/5, gloves to SFI 3.3/5 and SFI-5 shoes. Your series or sanctioning body sets the minimum you need.

TPP (Thermal Protective Performance) describes how well the material system protects against heat — higher is better. Our Proban® single-layer suits are TPP 10; our 2-layer Nomex® suits are TPP 21.6.

Weight is shown in grams per square metre (g/m²). More layers and more weight add protection, but also warmth — the right choice balances the rating you need with comfort in the seat.

Not fire resistant materials — sublimation fabric, CORDURA®, leather — are for karting, rental and team wear, where a fire rating is not required.

Racing Suits — Certified vs. Non-Certified

Choose the right construction for your product

Car racing suits and karting suits are built to different standards for a reason — fire risk in competitive karting is minimal, while car racing suits are built and rated specifically for fire protection. Confirm the exact rating your series or track requires before ordering.

Gloves, shoes, layers & team kit

Auto racing gear is built from Nomex and other fire-resistant materials to protect the driver. Karting gear uses non-Nomex performance fabrics chosen for grip, comfort and durability, because karting doesn't carry the same fire risk. Here's what each product is made from.

Racing Gloves

Car racing gloves are part of the driver's fire protection; karting gloves are built for grip and feel. The two are made from different materials.

FAQ

Material questions

What does TPP mean?+

TPP (Thermal Protective Performance) measures how well a fabric system protects against heat. A higher TPP means more protection. Our SFI 3.2A/1 Proban® suits are rated TPP 10 and our 2-layer SFI 3.2A/5 Nomex® suits TPP 21.6.

What is the difference between inherent and treated fire resistance?+

Inherent materials such as Nomex® are fire resistant because of the fibre itself, so the protection does not wash out. Treated materials such as Proban® FR cotton are cotton finished with a flame-retardant process.

Are karting suits fire resistant?+

No. Our karting suits use sublimation performance fabric, built for comfort, design freedom and abrasion resistance. Where a series requires an SFI-rated suit, choose an auto racing suit.

Can I get material swatches?+

Yes — ask us for swatches of the materials you are considering and we will arrange them with your enquiry.

Not sure which material?

Tell us the discipline, the rating your series requires and how the garment is branded. We'll recommend a construction and include it in your quotation.
